Arabic Music is depressing..

By: Mona
.......................

I never really pay attention to the words in the song.. seldom.. if the song has a good beat then great.. it is something that will entertain me on the bus ride to work.. but this morning I was listening and paying attention (I know first time ever  ) .. and it turns out.. that arabic music is so depressing.. especially songs sung by females.. it’s all about tragedy and heartbreak.. yet the male’s songs are 50-50.. either sad or in love with the beautiful tan girl.. yah right.. tan girl my ass.. Arab mom want their sons to marry a hot blond chick with a huge front.. lol

So like I said.. arabic songs are depressing.. Especially Shirine Ahmed and Samira Saeed songs that I listened to this morning…

Here are some examples:

Samira Saeed: Mosh Ayza At3atheb Tany (I don’t want to suffer again)

Samira Saeed: Aal Eh (He said what)

Samira Saeed: Ma Khalas (That’s enough)

Shirine Ahmed: Lazem A3eesh (I have to live)

Shirine Ahmed: Niseeny (He forgot me)

Shirine Ahmed: Inta Akher Wahed (You are the last one)

Shirine Ahmed: Aal Sa3ban 3aleeh (He said he is feeling bad)

Yeah, there always heart injuries and pain, etc. If contemporary Arab music reflects the reality of the Arab world then I wonder how the population is increasing so fast.

I lived in the US for 14 years and during this time I only listened to Arab music. It is a matter of reference and this is a free world. I love Arabic music because they speak to my mother language and because I grew up with them. I also love them because they capture how I feel about love, hate, anger, happiness, and every emotion you can think of.

Hey have you ever heard Niyaz? They have a distinct Persian sound (does that count as Arabic?) but with a global/trance electronica twist. I love them – Azam Ali’s voice is amazing and they have just the right amount of that trance beat to make it ‘cool’ for western audiences. Check them out http://www.sixdegreesrecords.com/artists.php?artist=Niyaz they just released a new record yesterday: and you can hear a sample here: http://sixdegreesrecords.com/support/Ishq.mp3

Also you might like Bendeniz from Turkey, she is more pop/hip-hop sounding if you go for that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sypzhfqbeyo

I understanding what you’re saying here.

But as seen there in your list, Sherine and Sameera Saed are both Arabic pop singers. And as far as pop music goes, it always has the tendency to be cheesy, overdone/shallow, corny, tenaciously boring, but upbeat nonetheless – regardless of any language it’s sung in.
