I myself have naturaly light skin…but i also have very sensitive skin. I’m an arab and whenever someone asks me where i’m from they’ll say “oo! i thought you were from the islands!” when i go out and it’s sunny…my skin gets darker. i don’t like the reactions i get but my only option is bleaching my skin….so to hell with ignorant people…if they make stupid comments, ignore them…you’re arab if you’re arab, no matter what the colour of your skin.

Dear Mona, countries are not defined by cultural or sociopolitical habits. They are defined by territory, constitution and law. Thats still the sad difference between germans and palestinians. Both are nations and you described some important parts of the “collective identity” that correspondents with “collective rememberance” in any single german/palestinian.

“Makes somebody german” I know some palestinians that are germans. They don’t look like me, etc… but they are as german as I am. And its definitly NOT the mind…. “Quite contrary” says that from the monocultural “aryan” german 1945 to the multicultural society in our days some very large parts of cultural meanings of “mind” have changed and will further change.

Wow, I am seeing a fight, so let me answer people’s comments!

Simon – your words are so true! That’s why I get a variety of people from all over the world visiting my blog. I still write about normal real things. And my skin colour and nationality should not matter.

Shawn – yes, I know. Some people out there are just ignorant!

Tafkas – I don’t understand why you are refuting that point when he said German. Also, I disagree with you. You can never even compare people’s minds of the past and the present. Obviously, life changes over time and over centuries. But language is a factor, way of living, patriotisms, and nationality! Those things will never change!

Simon, sorry, but I am German an I can tell you that you can only be German by birth. [or naturalisation]. Mind? I think the most of the Germans minds are quite contrary to Germans minds some centuries ago.

Odd. Most of the Palestinians I know from when I was in Palestine are a bit darker, too. Certainly not white… In fact, my best friend in Nablus is a little lighter-skinned than most and people ask her if she’s American… That and her English is flawless.

Don’t worry about it… You’re absolutely gorgeous, anyway.

It is very easy to get tan in Laughlin. Sunshine galore!! If not have fun whatever you choose to do.

You are lucky that you can tan naturally. Having pale skin is a real nuisance come summer. I don’t like having to layer on the sunscreen so my skin doesn’t end up looking like a cooked lobster. Nothing I can do about the freckles though. I get new additions every year. My mother’s cousin once won a contest for the most freckles so that should give you some idea how spotty my mother’s side of the family gets.
