Using the name of God

By: Mona
.......................

Google Buzz

This is a topic that has been bothering me for a while. How some people who are not religious what so ever, and who continuously use religion and the name of God to justify their action or to hide what they have done. The word “wallah” (I swear to God) has lost all meaning. Not only that, I notice people use religion to attack other people although they are the ones doing things wrong. I find that absurd.

So a person tells me and swears to God that they didn’t do something. From their eyes and facial expressions, you know they are lying. So you cannot say anything back to them to try to correct them.

Also, how people use damnation in the name of God towards another person. Always using terms such as God may take you away or die. All these insults using the name of God. Not only do they hurt the other person emotionally, but why use the name of God to insult someone else?

Like seriously.. when will this end?

hey there! just surfing the net and stumbled upon your blog. i’m a fellow palestinian living down here in the States. I totally agree with your post: some just have no clue about the concept of God; it simply has gotten to be just an allusion, nothing more.
    tayeb, salaams to you.

    asalaamu alaikum,

you are correct, people should stop using His name in this way. However, those that do so when lying will pay the price is this is Allah’s will.

I agree Jamal with what you said.. God will be the one who will punish them for such lies and misusing his name.

Bingo! Welcome to World Peace’s Obstacle Numero Uno. Arab/Muslim as well as Christian worlds’ most dangerous contagion.

Oh, yeah, all the way down to the mundane every regular little shmuck using the Lord’s name in Vain. (that is one of the Ten Commandments NOT to do)

exactly BostonWW.. it has nothing to do with a particular religion.. it’s people’s use of God’s name in Vain.. Which is a big time sin!

I still think it’s silly that using His name can have any value in punishment or reward. The actions you live your life by should be what is judge.

I don’t evoke the name of God very often, so it’s not something I really care about. I just find these kind of conversations silly, is all.

it’s just another form of desensitization in my own opinion…you use something long enough…it just doesnt mean anything anymore… after all ..there is no IMMEDIATE penalty

I think it becomes a habit after a while. The person who uses these terms has done so so many many times it looses its intrinsic value and is nothing but air to them…not knowing how their words can affect others or even their own personal faith… :flower:

How does not believing in something all of a sudden preclude you from using common phrases?

Rich from DC – Maybe.. it all depends on what you believe in.. but to use the name of God in vain is very wrong.

Robert – that’s true.. not an immediate penalty.. but there are consequences that a person has to endure due to this behaviour in the long run.

Mariana – yah.. it’s not that the person says it unconsciously and without caring anymore.. it is the effect it produced among other people who have to listen to it.

JohnL – that’s the problem with some people now a day.. even if they don’t believe in a higher power, using his name in vain does not justify their use in such way.

Robert and Marianna make great points and have a good perspective.

This discussion and symptom could be unfolded onto explainig many ummm..”misunderstandings” that inflate into major saga, but we won’t do that here today.
