Second day down, twenty-eight to go

Today I was an absolute bored lazy slacker at work. It wasn’t the coffee this time. No no. I drank a full mug this morning. So I was pretty awake, I think I just needed a bit of excitement and something to do. So I went to the bookstore at the University to buy a bunch of books for my Literature course. Why am I taking it? Good question. It seems for grad school and stuff I need to have some essay background. Makes sense. So my plan is to apply for grad school next semester or in the summer. I am not putting my hopes up, but I got as good as a chance as anyone.

So I had many plans the past two years. I want to very much apply for grad school so I went back to take more courses since I did only a general degree. I took more, and I was really interested in applying for business schools and stuff. I even considered Law since I love to argue for any reason.

Anyways, then I decided, well, if all my plans back fire, I got Comp Sci grad to look forward to. That is last on my list, but I took all the courses I need so far with a very high average. I decided to take the last one, a Software Requirements Engineering course. I was hesitant to take it, but I thought, well, if all my above plans fail, I got something to take with me to the real world. I mean I know my current job will never upgrade my position, but I am very motivated to take a step forward. I love programming, don’t get me wrong, but I like the stepping stone in software project development. I want to do the business cases, and the requirements. It’s what I like. I like to think, research, analyze, and write reports. So I went to class on the first day last week. There were 6 people in the class. The professor is from the industry. I think it is the first time for him to teach and he has real world experience and his own company. He said his software team is making a software for the government of Canada. Hmm, it made me very interested and thinking maybe I can apply for a job with his company and he will hire me since I pretty much work for a government organization. He is not all about academics which I love. So from the first day he kept asking questions and stuff, and I kept raising my hand. I never ever talk in class. Never ask questions or answer from fear of not knowing. However, in this course, and after five years of working, I know the answers. I know all the answers!

So this week, the prof wanted to know our names, and I said Mona, blah blah. So easy and I kept answering and raising my hand. Then the third class was yesterday, he remembered my name. Is it cause he is Italian and the name Mona is pretty famous. Or that my name is very famous, or just cause I am such a geek that I raised my hand so much. I can’t help if I know the answers. I just know a lot. A LOT about Software Development. The prof then kept smiling at me and knew I knew all the answers, even when I didn’t raise my hand, he knew and just asked me to answer. One guy in my class also works at the University, he works at the Information Technology section, which pretty much he knows a lot too. I didn’t mention it and I never said I worked. He did.. hmm, I wondered why. So I decided to not say that I work and I am just a “young” geeky student who knows a lot. My plan is to get a 90+% in this course cause the term project is a joke. The project is to write a requirements document to my boss about 5 pieces of software that a company might use to write a software requirements document. I read it and I was in disbelief. An advanced high level / master’s degree level course has such a project. A term project? I was laughing hysterically in my head. I can do this in a day. So I am going to slack off till December 1st, 2 days before it is due.

Anyways, so that’s that for me. I love school and it keeps my brain stimulated. I think it is the reason I still work at the University, easy access to courses and it is much cheaper to pay for courses as a part time student!

So today, I left work early again. I was bored out of my mind and I am done testing for the 10th time! I am not 100% convinced it is bug free, but I got Monday to double check. So I went to the mall, and I couldn’t buy any clothes, after spending $220 this morning buying books for my lit course, (Children’s Literature), I love the course by the way, but I got to read a lot. Writing is not an issue for me. DUH! It is the easiest thing for me on earth. Writing my opinion and arguing a point is what I love to do.

Today, my mom made yummy food. Good she didn’t make a lot thank God, and I removed the extra extension piece in the dining room table that made it too wide. Before we ate, obviously someone has to argue about something stupid before or after. However, it wasn’t me! I didn’t fight. It was my bro and my mom.. Wohoo!! They fought and I was looking and trying to figure out who’s fault is it. My brother has a very very bad temper. I keep telling him and everyone I know, that my brother has a very bad fuse. It blows up really fast!! hahaha

So my brother was mad. Super mad. My sister came downstairs and said, “what’s wrong with him, his eye brows are crooked down like this  .” I laughed and I tried to be the mediator and figure out who should apologize to who and I kept telling mom, “very very bad, your fault, haram (sinful) in Ramadan to get angry. What did he do?” Mom got mad, “what you mean what I did, I am his mother, he needs to learn to behave and learn some manners!” I thought to my self, “hmm, he is 31 years old, manners, learn, ehm… ” So I decided to not say anything anymore, or my mom’s fuse will blow up when I say something that is factual and not of her liking!

Anyways, when it was time to eat, I guess they made up and things went back to normal. I was hoping it was a prolonged fight with more drama. It would have been more entertaining if it lasted more than an hour. Oh well.

So I am drinking an energy drink and wanting to stay up a bit tonight and read some books and stuff. I got lots to read. :)

Ok Mona I think you’re the only blogger whose posts are longer than mine LOL! Anyway, don’t be surprised that you’re going to be asked to do pointless and stupid projects in graduate school. When you get to that level of education (my experience) it’s more about the application and the interest stimulation and not, as you said, about the academics. I’ve seriously taken the easiest exams and have given the most casual presentations during my masters and this is at a top american university.

You will likely though come across some super anal professors and classes where you give hour and a half long presentations and the professor will analyze every single word you said, different professors have different teaching philosophies as to the purpose of a graduate course.

LOL…so true..I believe the older i get …the LESS i know…and yet at 17 i knew EVERYTHING. Unfortunately between work…and 2 hobbies…(one of which has turned into a second job on the weekend)..and my automotive pursuits… time seems to be a debilitating factor. I think I would like to go back and study music from a more theoretical aspect…instead of the “winging it” on Fri and Sat nights aspect. Oh well…live and learn as they say. Have a good week.
