Well according to the Canadian Council on Learning who did the study, many Canadians are struggling with literacy. I can believe it too. When I was growing up, I was one of the few kids in my grade that liked reading books for fun. I don't recall there being too many bookworms in my class. I could count the number of kids I saw reading for pleasure on one hand. The more somebody reads the better they are at it and the better their vocabulary becomes. What has happened is the school system has made reading a chore so many children don't like to read plus there is a shortage of books in the school libraries, which doesn't help. Also, some of the teachers were very poor at teaching English to students. Students today are passed on to the next grade whether they are reading at the appropriate grade level or not. It is not uncommon for even college and university students to need remedial English! It is a disgrace that schools are graduating students who can barely read and write. That is why standardized testing has come into being because of this sad fact. Now that they have made the curriculum more rigorous, our high school drop out rate has jumped which isn't good. That tells me that students are not getting the help they need to succeed in school. In this day and age, nobody should be illiterate.

Some people can't read labels. There was study done and something like half the Canadian population has trouble reading and writing. My Mom came across a woman who couldn't even read the choices on the vending machine and she had to ask my mom for help!
