i think its a case by case basis kind of thing....some kids have no clue about money and think its just a given...they probably need the harder lessons from parents...other kids seem to naturally have an understanding that to get something you have to work for it. Yep..i agree most rich people are VERY tight but not all... i've met a few who remember where they came from. As for myself..my parents and i didnt have a very good relationship when i was growing up..in fact i moved out at 17 and they left the country.. with no relatives and being an "only" i was def on my own. Things are much better now...they buy me dinner a couple of times a month..

Some parents choose to be hard on their children to teach them the value of money and hard earning. They don't want their kids to grow up having everything easy. To them, this is how they want their kids to grow up as. I can't say they're cheap, I don't know their motives but some parents are like that.

Bill - I agree with you. We have to earn our own way, and not accept hand outs unless we are desperate.

Chikapappi - your parents are like my parents.. are we lost twins with same family! lool

Asoom - I know.. I swear I think rich people are the cheapest because they have so much and parting with it is like sweet sorrow to them!

Mona-good post! Wallah the the cheapest people I ever met were also some of the richest people I know. We have this guy here (my dad's best friend) who is a multi millionaire (not kidding), he has clothing boutiques that famous people have shopped in. Anyway, he makes his 3 kids that have driving liscences all share one car and they used to have to share it with the mom as well!

I think I wrote 2 posts about money and my family, my family is also like your famiy alhamdulilah, in the fast few years they've gone through some serious hard financial times and my dad would give me his last twenty if he knew I didn't have money-I guess with them they don't want us to feel financial hardship because they're more familiar with it.

Allah yekhallehom la eleek manmoon, my family is the same thank God.. although I work & make good money bas till today my mom asks if i need money or she goes n' buys me stuff...

I don't think that circumstances changes how people look at money; Noveau riche - people who get wealthy quickly tend to forget where they come from & act stupid... o some rich people are humble & manage to spend their money wisely... it all comes down to the person - parents themselves. how they raise their kids & teach them the value of money...

I agree with children having to earn their own money, my family was by no means well off but we did more then OK but I still had to work for what I wanted. Hey when I was 8 I was working at my current place of employment to but a bike at the end of the summer and riding it for the first time knowing I had earned it was the best feeling I'd ever had! I do think that your parents should still be there to help out if your desperate, but not for hand outs. Oh and a word of advise on your students loans! Are you not paying interest on it? That, for me, is more then enough reason to pay it off as quick as you can!
