Money repeller
I may be the strangest person on earth. I get money thrown at me all the time, but what do I do? I completely ignore it. I don’t even care about getting anymore money. I don’t want any more money. I am content with my salary that anything extra does not satisfy me in any way.
Last Thursday I got an email from a lady I know that wants me to do contract work (website design) for her friend for $500 dollars. Very simple work. No coding, nothing. I looked at the email, and just stared at it for a minute and ignored it and never looked at it again nor replied to it. I just didn’t care. All the time I get asked to do web site work for XXX amount of money and it is such simple work that people will jump on the band wagon to earn a bit more cash. I don’t. I lost complete interest in doing any contract work.
Why you may ask?
Because it is a dirty business. You work sometimes too much and do great things, with so many revisions for an unsatisfied cheap ass customer. $500 dollars for a website? How many revisions? How many complaints and endless emails. You know private contractors charge $60 – $90 an hour for custom web designs? Yet, they think I am money hungry and want to offer me whatever they think should be the cost of it!
One time, I was offered by this private consultant company to redesign a content management site for their client. A simple custom template. Nothing hard, but takes a bit of creativity. I was offered $20 an hour, and they charged the client $60 an hour for my work. I just sat there thinking, why the hell you want me to do this for a 1/3 of the price? You want to make money off of my talents? Who do you think I am? I said no. I think they wondered why I wasn’t money hungry like them. If they really wanted to pay someone that cheap then she should have found some highschool kid who has nothing better to do and does this for fun.
Another time, I was offered to work for someone to create this new great design for a large website. I didn’t do any of the coding, someone else I know did and accepted $20 an hour even though he was ridiculed a lot for his great work, but he needed the money. I didn’t have a direct communication with the client, so I had no fucking clue what they wanted. So I just did whatever based on what the consultants have discussed with me. Later on, I was told that they don’t need me to design this site, and that the client wanted to hire a company to do it. Same day I figured out that one of the c
consultant’s friend does graphic design for a living and needed some work and they gave him the job instead. So lying to me is ok? Wasn’t it.
After a few incidents I had with private contract work, I just got sick of doing it and I find no joy in satisfying people who want cheap extravagant work. Having one job is enough, believe me. I don’t want to go home and do more work for ungrateful cheap fools.
I rather sleep all day than do unnecessary contract work.

Wait a minute… now if something is easy and you’ll get an instant 500 bucks, why not!!
And for the “unsatisfied customers” thing, don’t try to be creative. its easier tostick to what they want no matter how lame it is. In fact, it gets even easier for you. Its not about money hunger, but when its as easy as this, I seriously question why not.
I still wouldn’t do it. Too much of a hassle. It’s easy for me cause it’s work I can do with no problems, but I don’t want the headache.
just wanted to say that i love reading ur blog :mrgreen:D
(Personal Health > Money)
Anyday
it’s not always about the money, anyway. it’s more about doing what you love to do.
exactly!!
U’v answered that one urself, its not that u don’t want the money “ur a money lover like the rest of normal ppl” but if u divide the $500 on the effort u’ll put into this plus the follow up headaches…the result is not worth it.
Your opinion won’t be the same if ur offered $5k for the same job now would it.
Still glad ur doing good
You are a strange one indeed.
P.S. Could you send me some of that work please?
Hmm.. ok.. I am strange to you.
P.S I am not sending you anything. I don’t even know who you are.
