What a refreshing site. To see some so brave and truthful about Arabs and Arab society is a breath of fresh air. I have to admit, although I am proud of Arabian history, Babylon, Ancient Egypt and so on, I find it difficult to tell people I am an Arab, I really do feel a sense of shame.. I dunno why, we have a great history, but I find it hard to tell people that I am an Arab, because wether I like it or not, the whole world is moving forward and Arabs are still stuck in their backward and close-minded thinking. How can I be proud to be an Arab?

Lovely site! Keep up the good work!

My favorite part is how people imagine what you are feeling. Shame is a feeling.

It's kind of twisted in a way because usually people who are concerned about our feelings care about us, but in this case, they obviously did _not_ care. Otherwise, it would have been phrased differently such as, "Are you OK?"

Anyway, I thought the post was hilarious.

I like what you said K and I didn't mean for this post to be negative in any way. Just stating my opinion about certain ppl's behavior. I think by the 4 or 5 comment in this post some person decided that my opinion wasn't worth it because of my gender. Oh well!

I am sure no one wants to hear my too sense on this subject, but being a "Arab" who was raised in both parts of the world I thought I should inject my opinion.

I tend to be neutral about both sides, "conservatives" and "liberal" I don’t agree with this terms persay but lets use them for the sake of this post.

I think we all have to sit back and take a look about why some of the conservatives tend to be so judgemental of others(liberals) and bring out issues of freeing the land and so on .

When I look at what the media portrays over in the Arab world we get the real news uncensored, so you tend to see the crimes being committed on Arabs and this fuels the rage. I believe that when they see someone not caring about the same issues as they are, they take it personally and resort to attacking them and insulting them. Obviously this the wrong way to convey to people your opinion or thoughts.

I think the media plays a major role and the lack off it in western world as well. (THIS IS A WHOLE OTHER ISSUE IN ITS SELF).

What I learnt from being in the west for so many years is patience and tolerance, living in a city like Toronto were some many cultures and religions and races exist, you have to be. And if you are not open and accepting of such differences, then you will be the loser, you will segregate yourself and the hate will begin which a become a major issue amgonst many communities is such big western cities. As well you will lose the opportunity and the chance to learn about the various beliefs out there. You live, you learn and move on, you may change your mind about certain things, but you always have to hold on to your beliefs. I guess what i am trying to say its ok to sit down and listen to others opinions or religions, this is life we all exist on the same planet and non of us are going anywhere. But the key is never to lose your identity!!

I am nor "Liberal" nor "Conservative". I have my views and beliefs but I don’t judge anyone, we all have to be able to discuss in a civilized manner. Everyone has their right to an opinion to be able express it freely without being attacked by the other party.

But like Mona said that we are all Arabs, and we tend to have strong sense of culture and we are all proud of our heritage and very patriotic.

Sorry if i rambled on and if i didn't make any sense..... but ill stop for now...

Thanks Mone for the post...

I am 27.
I follow Islam completely. So all your questions about being westernized is irrelevant. Am I conservative? Yes. I was raised this way and I will never marry a non-muslim. It's a sin!

Am I open minded? YES. That's the difference.

It is simple for any one to claim that he is westernized (born and raised in western countries and believes in western values) like you describe yourself
If I may ask you as a western raised girl living in the 21st century, will you marry a non Muslim ?? a Jew or some one who don't believe in god ??
Are you still a virgin at the age of 28 ??
May be you will answer honestly and prove to what extent you are westernized

Good post Mona, people should also realise that it is people like yourself who take away a lot of the Stereotypes us westerners have of Arabs. You have given a positive light on Arabs other then the one I am spoon-fed on TV.

Hello Mona,

It seems like you care after all!

But seriously, I really want to thank you a lot..I mean you opened my eyes on some very important issues...You see,I'm ready to settle down now and start a family, something I resisted for many years for the simple fact that(and please don't be offended for me saying that)my biggest fear is to end up with confused or messed up children like you.Its much easier not being an Arab when you raise children..I mean you start counting the days until they reach 18 and tell them to get the fcuk out or pay rent, and have them over on Christmas and thanksgiving dinners  but too bad I can't change who I am.
My point is, I wanted to thank you because after reading that silly and funny post(Ashamed of being an Arab), I want to do all in my power to be the best father and husband.I already started discussing that matter with my "Arab" sweetheart and future wife.I printed out that article and discussed it over one evening..we laughed so hard that night
Finally, what really pissed me off about that article was allowing some people in the commentary to insult Muslims and not even sticking up for your own religion, and mostly for stupid reasons(girls getting dumped my a Muslim guy for example).try saying stuff like that about Jews or blacks!! but I guess we live in a time where any low life can take a cheap shot at Muslims and Islam and get away with it...we have to draw the line somewhere.
May God bless you and give you peace of mind.

Salam

There are shitty people like that in EVERY culture! What I want to know is why do they read it if they can't handle it? Everyone is entitled to have views, opinions and feelings. You blog is how you express them... So if they can't take it or are going to become offended why are they reading it?

I have had similar things happen to me as a result of my writing, fuck them! Keep speaking your mind and saying what YOU feel, they can suck it.
