Remembering one of the greatest poets of Palestine

By: Mona
.......................

This morning I was watching live on El-Jazeera the burial of the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. They flew his body to Jordan via Emirates Air Line from USA. And his body was sent by a helicopter to the Westbank city of Ramallah.

My mom this morning all she can do is sing the song Ommi (My Mother) by Marcel Khalifa (Lebanese singer) and the lyrics or poetry by Mahmoud Darwish. I thought it was a good song to share with everyone, and at the bottom is the English translation.

May he rest in peace.

My Mother

I long for my mother’s bread
My mother’s coffee
Her touch
Childhood memories grow up in me
Day after day
I must be worth my life
At the hour of my death
Worth the tears of my mother

And if I come back one day
Take me as a veil to your eyelashes
Cover my bones with the grass
Blessed by your footsteps
Bind us together
with a lock of your hair
With a thread that trails from the back of your dress
I might become immortal
Become a god
If I touch the depths of your heart

If I come back
Use me as wood to feed your fire
As the clothesline on the roof of your house
Without your blessing
I am too weak to stand

I am old
Give me back the star maps of childhood
So that I
Along with the swallows
Can chart the path
Back to your waiting nest

It is sad to see him go. Thanks for posting the poem and the song. My favorite Darwish poem is lover from Palestine. Here are some parts of it.

    Your eyes
    A thorn in my heart
    Painful yet adorable
I shield it from the wind
And stab it deep through the night
    Through pain
    Its wound illuminates the darkness
    Transforms my present into future
    Dearer than my soul
And I shall forget as our eyes meet
That once we were together behind the gate
    * * *
    I swear
From my eyelashes I shall weave you
    A kerchief
    with words sweeter than honey
    And kisses I shall write:
    And kisses you were
    And so you will remain
