Why I don’t like student associations: part I.

By: Mona
.......................

It was a cold November day in the year 2001, and I was incredibly bored. Also, one of my closest friends at the time was bored too. Boredom can result in many absurd actions, especially when you are only 20 years of age. However, when a person starts something bad, they must continue the God forsaken deed till the end. No turning back and no regrets.

The previous year I was an executive in the Arab student’s association at the university. I had two positions. I was the secretary, and the website creator/maintainer. At the time, technology was being developed rapidly, but not everyone knew the tricks of the trade. It was still enigmatic and not many people used computers and the internet.

Boredom. We all know what boredom means, but do we all know the result of boredom?

My friend at the time, who was two years younger than me, asked me if I still had the email list of contacts from last year’s members since I was responsible for emailing them. I replied, “ahh.. yeah! Why would I get rid of it?” I wasn’t a member or an executive that year, I will provide another story of why I wasn’t and why I hold a grudge against student organizations. Eventually, I gave her the list, and I asked, “are you looking for someone in particular?” She said, “yes. I want to talk to this guy.”

Obviously I laughed, and I said, “why don’t you just talk to all the guys. They don’t care and all they do is chat with girls.” She stared at me with a sparkle in her eye and said, “why don’t we?”

I stared in bewilderment and said, “what do you suggest I do? Do you want to make a fake MSN account?” She smirked and said, “you are technology obsessed and know all the tricks of the trade, so why not.” I said, “you suggest we make a fake girl’s account? What should we call her?” She nodded her head and said, “not one, but more!”

More meant trouble, a lot of trouble! I told her, “I am not going to make multiple accounts. I can’t chat using all of them at the same time.” This was before there was such thing as multiple MSNs that can be run on the same machine. She said, “I can use one, and you can too.” I said, “no no. This won’t work at all. We need another plan.” I thought about it some more, and said, “let’s make one account for multiple girls.” My friend said, “what? How? You mean … ah. OK! Even better.”

So I made the account. It was something of this nature: cute_arab_girls_xxx@hotmail.com.

Making that account was easy, but adding over 80 people on it, girls and guys, was a hassle. Then she said, “well, let’s add more people who weren’t even in the list. I know lots of emails that I can get.” I said, “fine.. but make sure NO ONE knows it is me and you. Make sure that we only chat from home or in a corner in a lab where no one can see us.”

The adventure began at that moment, and my God, we both became popular in the strangest manner.

To be continued …
