My mama said, “global warming is a joke.”

By: Mona
.......................

I know for a fact that my little sister is going to grow up a very opinionated person affected by mass media and environmental crap. Don’t get me wrong, I do care about the environment and I do believe that nature is changing. However, I don’t believe in global warming, but believe we are ruining our environment in worse ways than ever.

The conversation started with my dad thinking of getting a snow blower for winter this year. I think he always had an itch to buy one, and now since he is getting older, he feels that he deserves to get one. I agree, because shoveling the numerous inches of snow in the driveway is a BITCH! Mom was saying something that one of her friends has one, and was telling a lame story about it and thought it was electrical. I said, “no no, it can’t be electrical and you take it out in the snow. It must be using gasoline just like the grass cutter.”

My sister flipped, she said, “you know all these things are bad for the environment. Look at our world and the problem with global warming.” I said, “you know what’s the earth’s biggest problem? It’s us HUMANS! Get rid of humans and the earth, according to your theory of global warming, will return to normal.”

My mom jumped in and said, “Global warming is a joke (7aki fadi). The earth has been around for millions of years, and God created it, and can do whatever he pleases with it.”

In my head I kept thinking that being a Muslim has its opinions. Sometimes I feel that if I can’t figure out an answer to something, just say God wants it that way!

Thinking about it, no wonder some scientists are atheist.

I agree with you. Although God created this world, man is destroying this earth. That’s why we are doing numerous experiments in the earth to study the nuclear pattern as well as destroying the marine life…

    Mona:

I don’t disagree with you, but I agree more strongly with your sister. You’re absolutely right that if we eliminated humans, the problems would go away. Not because climate changes wouldn’t occur or because weather patterns wouldn’t change, but because no one would be around to care! :)

I STRONGLY believe that humans and the environment can live in harmony and actually support and sustain one another instead or (seemingly) working against one another – humans just need to let go of their ego and “dominate the world” mentality a bit for it to happen.

Unlikely? Maybe. But I’d rather be optimistic and believe that the human race can do it than to give up and live knowing that there is more we can do and not doing it…

    Namaste,

i don’t trust statistics but for lack of a better example here are some numbers for everyone to ponder on. btw i voted for your mom, and then thought about it….truly questioned the impact we have on earth.
we have fished about 70% of the fish pop. there is so much mercury in the ocean it is destroying all of the fish that we arent catching. More than 2/3 of the earths bee population has disappeared. the major forests are going bye bye very quickly. i learned as a grade schooler that the rainforest is being cut an acre every minute. and that was 18 years ago.
be optimistic all you want. I am optimistic that god will step in and help us out of this problem. however nothing will change the way people feel about money. if there is people to feed whose going to oppose them? it is my opinion that some people dont have a choice when it comes to creation or destruction. the man living in brazil trying to feed his family has no education and has to cut trees for a living. there is obviously too many people. the developmental ethic is killing the planet. the Greeks had a name for the spirit of the planet call Gaia and i believe it is starting to feel our pain. it as if we had to personify our own grief and make the planet, and others, feel it. the whole bee thing is the scariest cus without them we have no food. and no grain to feed the animals either. greed is destroying the planet and i feel the same way mona does its going to take some god given miracle to strike us from existence so that earth can rebuild.

we have the voice, we have the touch of humanity, and we have the choice of harmony, but some choose not to live in humility. the world is a beautiful place.

oops :p i meant to say i agree with your sister. and i heard something interesting from a bro the other day. he said before something becomes extinct it speeds up. life is a race to the finish. Isnt it true that the last stretch is when the runner speeds up to get ahead? now look at what we are doing…mass communication and transit so we are speeding up….there are certain patterns in nature that we have to be mindful of.

    I agree with you.

We are doing a lot of harm to the planet but I don’t think that we have enough influence to change the temperature of the entire planet.

The most greenhouse gasses are produced by termites. The second biggest source is cows.

Look at the temperature of the Sun over time and you will see a correlation between that and our temperature.

Also remember that we were in a mini ice age about 200 years ago that we are still coming back from.

we’re destroying it but the planet as well has its own weather cycles – so when it gets really bad it will burn all of us and follow it up with an ice age and then back to normal and life comes back

This world will be here long after we are. Yes I believe in Global Warming… But no matter what we do to this world it will still be here.

We need to remember this world has been here for billions of years. It has survied many many thing and maybe Humans are the worse but it is much stronger than we are.

We are not killing the planet… we are killing ourselves and the life around us. We are just making the planet very very sick, but it will survive.

Humuns have been on earth for less than a blink for the earths life. We have only been industrial for around 100 years… which is not even a second for how long the earth has been here… but in that second we have used most of the oil, and resources this earth has to offer.

We are just the cancer of this planet.

I think that there are obviously too many people on the planet. If there were less people then we would have no problem with anything we did from burning oil to going nuclear. Nature can only absorb so much damage in a given year. The end result will be running down of energy which will lead to famine which will lead to less humans.

If we had less children now, we could mitigate many of these problems. But humans won’t.

As individuals, however, there’s nothing we can do. So get a snow blower and use it all day. One snow blower isn’t going to overheat the planet.

Giving up on worrying about this problem is liberating. Will it be bad? I don’t know.

If anyone disagrees that too many people are not a problem then suggest that all the people in Africa, Asia, South America, and anywhere else they are poor move to their neighborhood, and they’ll change their mind. There’s a limit on how many people we want around us.
