What’s up with the racist stereotypes?

By: Mona

Google Buzz

I spent the past hour watching videos of the American presidential elections, and wondering what the hell is wrong with people. I have been constantly hearing people emphasize that Obama is Muslim and terrorist, and how can he lead America. Ahh.. ?

Ok, let me explain a few things for those bull headed people. I lived in USA for 5 years, and educated there through most of high school, and I am pretty sure I read something called Freedom of Religion in the constitution somewhere. But forget that. Freedom of Religion is not evident anymore in the US. It’s all Bull. Then, I watched all these videos and people claim that Obama is Arab-Muslim-Terrorist. Wow. Now that’s heavy for a guy who was born in the USA and had a father from Kenya which is not an Arab country what so ever. It is an African country that speaks Swahili and English with only 10% of the population of Muslim faith, and the rest mostly Christian.

Ok? Anyone see a problem there? Secondly, Obama claims he is a Christian. He is. Give it a rest. When one believes something, and swears by it, then he is of that faith. He is almost president of the most powerful country in the world, and you people still argue about faith? Why don’t you argue if he can actually fix the messed up American economy, health care, and diplomatic problems? Can he do all that? Isn’t that what a president supposed to do? He is not running to be a religious leader. I doubt 90% of the people would care to listen to him preach about faith anyways. By the way, the main religions are the same. They believe in one God. Blah blah.. What happens if Obama was Jew, what would have people done? Or what if he was Atheist? Wouldn’t that have been worse? People will then claim he is communist!

I just don’t get why Americans are so divided over this. Don’t people realize that America is such a multicultural nation, and if you are born in the USA, then you are eligible to run for presidency? Or does a person have to be of European decent, white, and 100% Christian to run?

This election has really showed the world how racist Americans are towards one another. Why live in American then? Move to Canada! Even if you are not born in Canada you can run for government. Come to Canada.. come! We have the same population as California. We got room for you because we are the second largest country in landmass in the world. Come and bring your business here! :P We need jobs!

I found this interesting video called “To Kill an American.” It teaches people a bit about the diversity of Americans. Can you spot an American? They could be anyone!

What do you think of the video? Any thoughts?

I am from the UK but I always remember from my history lessons hearing about the ‘mixing pot’ that is America, something to be proud of and a fundamental part of the American Dream. Thousands flocked to America in the past and still do in pursuit of that dream. Whilst Britain does not historically hold the same ideal as part of its indentity, it too has become a mixing pot of so many different cultures, faiths, nationalities that are all free to live in Britain and become part of what it means to be British. I see all of these people as British, and I love the fact that you can get all different kinds of foods, clothes, music etc. and respect the fact that there are different religions. I just DO NOT UNDERSTAND the people who complain about ‘Muslims’ or ‘Arabs’ etc. But there is always a group to focus on. In Britain it was the Irish, then the Jews, the West Indians, now the Muslims (to simplify things a lot). There’s just always someone to target…

Sorry for my long rant! In short YES I agree. Being American incorporates a lot of things, and though that video states the obvious to me I believe that many people just do not get it so I hope people watch it!

But it’s so cold in Canada!

Colin Powell came out and said he was bothered by the “He’s a Muslim” attacks because they were offensive to Muslims. Obama’s campaign hasn’t gone there, though, which is cowardly in my opinion. For now, all they do is refute the rumors and say Obama is a Christian. But I haven’t heard from the campaign a “So? And what if he were a Muslim?”

The rumor only exists because his dad was raised a Muslim and later become an Atheist. Not only that, but he barely knew his dad. I don’t see any reason to refute that he is indeed Christian. I wouldn’t say that makes him an Arab or a Muslim. It’s purely political. People will say anything to denounce the opposition.

The only people that believe he is a Muslim and that it’s a bad thing are the extreme conservatives and the ignorant (see elderly lady at McCain rally). It wouldn’t make him bad if he were a Muslim, but he wouldn’t win the election. Just like a Christian would never win an election in a historically or majority Muslim country. At least not anytime soon.

America was created by immigrants and religious refugees, who wanted their new country to be one where people were invited to come and practice their own beliefs, so off course it stands to reason that today they don’t like immigrants, especially if they’re Mexican, and those of the wrong religion, i.e. not right wing Christian, especially Muslims.

In other words it is unwise to ever underestimate the powers of irony and hypocrisy.

I think it’s safe to say that the vast majority of McCain supporter do not believe or claim that Obama is a Muslim or terrorist. It’s just that those are some of the loudest McCain supporters. It really a small part of the electorate but it makes for great headlines.

We have no shortage of radicals on the far right or far left. They are the ones the media reports on because those stories draw more eyeballs and sell more ads.

Most American are moderate and support ot oppose McCain and Obama for other more subtle reasons.

The sad fact is that moderates are simply boring. They don’t make for good news stories.

We are all Americans unless you are a Palestinian, then you are a slur to be used against your rivals.

Mona, I understand what you are saying. I have to hide who I am at work and socially. America isn’t as great as everyone makes it out to be. If my coworkers knew I was Arab (forget even mentioning Palestinian) my life would be hell.

the one thing that has separated humankind since its existence is xenophobia. fear of the unknown has been a driving factor behind hate. this subconscious attribute has made people fearful of neighboring tribes, of treacherous waters, and even of a woman with a silver tongue. :p however when you take the human factor out of it and replace that one all encompassing fear with the divine unknown, Allah Subhanna Wa Ta Allah, then all other fears are trivial. gods command is to love him and to love him we can learn to love all. when you put the fear of the unknown behind you then al-basra takes command.

It is because McCain’s campaign concentrate more of mud slinging and character assassination. This is sort of desperation on his behalf in order to mislead the undecided voters bec he cannot beat Obama when it terms of economy.

We need change America, Im feed up of the same policies from Bush handed down to McCain.

rumors like this, the Obama is a muslim thing, make me fume. Firstly because they have no foundation or because the foundation is very weak—secondly, because…so the hell what…so what if he IS a muslim, or a christian or an atheist…Can the man make good decisions regarding the country? Does he understand the constitution? Americans are all like retarded kids with ADD, they look at everything but what matters.

good post and you are a lovely woman!
