Down with carnivors!

Hello, my name is Mona, and I have been 99.99% vegetarian for two days.

Yesterday for lunch, my mom made rice and lamb. However, I bought this great Indian pastry with cottage cheese and spinach earlier, because I knew mom would put some type of meat for lunch. So after I opened the rice pot, I went to my mother and told her, “I do not eat meat anymore!” She said, “That’s good. Because lamb is too heavy.” I said, “It’s not because of the lamb. It’s because of the chicken you cooked yesterday.” She said, “What? What was wrong with the chicken?” I said, “It was not cooked right, and tasted weird!”

Then my mom suggested that I should just eat the rice and no lamb. Obviously I put some rice, and I heated up some Indian pastries.

I told my sister later my new life choice, and she said, “Does that mean you are a vegetarian?” I said, “No, I will eat shrimp. That’s it.” She laughed, “Is shrimp not a meat?” I said, “Yeah, sort of. But it is aquatic, and not disgusting like terrestrial meat. Plus shrimp is awesome! I can’t live without that.” She said, “Where will you get your proteins from?” I said, “Beans!” She said, “Eww! Fart face.” That’s when I almost slapped her silly, but she ran like the wind.

By the way, I don’t eat any type of cooked fish at all. I only eat raw salmon in sushi. Which reminds me. I WANT SUSHI! Who is willing to take me to a sushi fest? I am waiting for invites!

Today, for lunch my mommy made pizza. As she was preparing it, I noticed she put corned beef on both pizzas she was making. I was like NO! Mom said, “What? It is from a can.” I said, “That’s worse! Take it off!” So I ended up taking it off. I knew this life choice (again) was going to be hard to adjust for my mother. Since she saw that I was totally serious, she made tabouli too! I was in heaven. You don’t know how much I love tabouli. Delicious!

I decided to compromise with my mother about this no eating meat thing. I told her, “I don’t care how you cook the food. You can use chicken broth or whatever. It’s not like pork touching food! I am just not putting pieces of meat inside my mouth.”

You know what else I hate? It is not easy for us Muslims to eat out sometimes. Especially in fast food restaurants like Subway. Because they use the same knife for everything which pisses me off, and I have to demand a clean knife!

So far I feel great. I don’t feel sick and bloated anymore and I feel a lot healthier!

    Mona,

You are what is called a partial vegetarian. basicaly that means you eat some animal products. Partial vegetarians also eat dairy and eggs. No bread, cake, pasta, (some made with eggs) or pastries without them! also , you will get protien from the shrimp and salmon you say you will eat; dairy, (milk and cheese) eggs, tofu, and as you mentioned beans too. Don’t forget to take b12 vitamin supplements if you start eating less and less protien products.

    Regards,
    Kevin

@Kevin – well I am obviously not going to turn to a vegan. I like my milk, eggs, bread, and pastries! Plus I take my daily multivitamins! :)

Well, my mother and sister eat sushi more than I do, but I wouldn’t mind taking you out for lunch; maybe you’ll teach me how to eat raw fish properly. I make the best crab salad..Yummy, Mona I LOVE TABOULI…I can’t even begin to explain.

I once tried the Turkish equivalent of Indian pastry filled with cottage cheese and spinach and thought that it was delicious – the two are a great combination.

Eat what you like, don’t get hung up on the label vegan, vegetarian, partial vegetarion, etc. I am a horrible carnivor, but there are days that the smell of meat turns me off and I can’t eat any for a few days. then I will crave some. Sushi seems to be the perfect solution, but if we all ate it the oceans would be empty. That said, if you ever make it to Cincinnati, Ohio drop me a line. My family and I would love to take you to our favorite Sushi Buffet! Yum. I’m hungry…going there now :-)

Hi Mona, I’m not criticising you in any way here so please don’t take this the wrong way.

How comes you (used to) eat meat from Subway or from a can anyway? I thought Muslims were only supposed to eat Halal food. I’ve got a few Muslim friends and they avoid any meat products becuase they say it’s not halal. Just wondering becuase you seem to come across as someone who’s generally quite religious.

@Cassie – Read more about the truth of what halal really means. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam

“All meat must come from a herbivorous animal slaughtered in the name of God by a Muslim, Jew, or Christian, with the exception of game that one has hunted or fished for oneself. Food permissible for Muslims is known as halal food.”

I don’t quite follow. So are my friends allowed to eat meat but they just don’t know? I wouldn’t think that meat from subway has been blessed by anyone, irregardless of religion.

This is useful for me becuase it’ll mean we can go to nicer restaurants. I’m bored of Iranian.

@Cassie – some Muslims are really strict about their food, so are Jews. However, we are allowed to eat from Jews and Christians. I am not sure about blessed, but Muslims are required to bless their food whenever they eat anything anyways. I just know that Muslims are only allowed to eat from them. Your friends interpretation of things can vary, depending on how religious they are. Ask them if they want to eat at a strictly Jewish restaurant, and see if they will accept or not. Then you can tell if they are just extremely religious to the point of not accepting anything, or actually follow Islam and it’s rules properly.
