They love to rub it in
I have a strange set of parents. I don’t mind them sometimes.
Their eccentric behaviour is great blog content. Really. Anyways, so, I will speak again of this new lifestyle change that I decided to have – the vegetarianism. It is hard for my dad to adjust to – totally. I find it funny sometimes, and utterly irritating sometimes, but today was the funniest of them all!
My mom has to cook meat every single day. My dad can’t live without it at all. “Food has to have MEAT,” he says. In my case, I don’t care. I can just make a cheese sandwich and be fully satisfied. Our fridge has more cheese than vegetables. I know, it is not right, but my sister and I are mice in another life time. So, sometimes my mom cooks chicken, sometimes lamb, sometimes beef, but I don’t care. She can do whatever. She usually makes me vegetable soup or throws the bag of frozen vegetables and heats it up. That’s my daily lunch! Agh! However, whenever there are some left over pieces of chicken or whatever meat product, my dad YELLS all the way from downstairs and says, “MONA! You want the last piece of chicken!” Obviously, I get SO mad, and yell back, “NO! NO! NO! I do NOT eat meat!” I have been saying that daily for the past week.
However, today, my mom didn’t cook any meat, and made spinach pastries and lentil soup. I was like yah, kick ass meal! When I was eating, my dad kept staring at me and looking like a big baby with the rolled back lips and sad face, and he told me, “I could have gone and gotten chicken shawarma, but you don’t eat meat.” When I heard that, two things instantly started buzzing in my head. 1) He KNOWS I don’t eat meat anymore, and just keeps asking me over and over to see if I will give in and eat it again. 2) He can’t live a day without meat. So I said to him, “I will eat falafel. Falafel is not meat. Come to think of it, I feel like humous too!” He said, “oooh.. we have lots of homous cans. Oooooh.. let me check!” I thought, “dear God, he forgot about the shawarma and now thinking of homous!”
My mom makes fun of me too. Every time I eat, her and my dad start making animal noises, and say, “we are wolves! We only eat MEAT! Hum hum..”
Yes, these are my parents ladies and gentleman. I live in a zoo. If you wonder why I am a bit crazy, then I can genetically prove it!

Your parents are funny lol.
I wish I had your will power to become a vegetarian. It is so much healthier and I could lose a few pounds if I were one lol.
@lela – my horrible trait called “stubbornness” helps when I make up my mind on something.
You mentioned earlier that your father sometimes buys meat which purists would consider haraam. If that is the case, haraam meat contains excessive blood and toxins (compared to genuine halaal meat), through the way in which animals are slaughtered. We all know that these are detrimental to the health. So your decision to abstain from eating such meat benefits you in many ways.
Stubborn? You don’t say?!
@ES – where did you get your information from? the zoo? My dad only buys meat from the Arabic store. HALAL meat. Jeez. Get your information straight or ask before you make assumptions.
@Meyrick Kirby – umm.. yah..
I can’t do it!! I NEED MEAT! the only time i don’t eat it is if my husband eats out then the kids and I eat spaghetti. haha… I don’t know anything else that can satisfy my hunger without meat!!!
I personally think everything is healthy and good in moderation. Allah Sub7anahu Wa Ta3ala provided us with all foods, meat and vegetables, grains and so on because He knows best. Not eating it at all is like saying you know better than Him. (I say this with the best of intentions!) Beside, what’d u eat on this past Eid? U know it’s a SUNNAH to eat lamb on Eid Al Adh7a. Yallah… Gazash Allah Khair> keep us entertained! Peace out
@Malikat el Arab – I didn’t stop eating meat to be against my religion. Jeez. Why does everything go back to religion? I choose not to eat meat because I don’t feel like eating it anymore. That’s my problem. It has nothing to do with God or anyone else. Plus this phrase, “Not eating it at all is like saying you know better than Him,” is completely stupid and so closed minded and ARABIZED thinking. For eid, I didn’t eat meat or even eat much. Like you said it is just Sunna. Plus, what makes you think I am Sunni or shi3a or whatever denomination of Islam? I love you guy’s assumptions. Really clever of you guys.
“arabized”… Ur a trip! when i say Sunnah… I’m not refering to a sect… now who’s being closed minded? All I meant is that regardless of SUNNI, Shia, Suffi, or whatever Eid al Adh7a is the sacrifice Ibrahim was willing to make. So we celebrate this day with the slaughter of a lamb (sounds harsh doesn’t it?!) and eat it. Ya bint al halal… I say everything with only good intentions. I assumed u do this blog to express and insha Allah grow and learn things from all types of ppl and maybe even help others grow too!
I like talking from a religious aspect cuz then it’s not a personal oppinion but an opinion shared by many! get it? I hope so… Gazash Allah khair!
PS eat some meat… it’s good for u!
@Malikat el Arab – No. I will not eat meat. Live with it.
ok then DON’T EAT MEAT! yallah miss rebellious… Do the opposite!!! HAHAHAHA 3anooda
just curious… are there alot of ARAB where u live? and are they a mix of different countries or mostly Palis?
@Malikat el Arab – yes.. plenty of Arabs. Different countries.
I just love Shawarma!!! sorry I shouldn’t say that but I do! I have lived in Kuwait for a year and I love Mid-east dishes. What’s funny is that my hubby is a vegetarian but we get along find. I only eat meat when we go out but at home I’m a veggie-tarian! ha!

Apologies…as a result you will deny yourself important nutrients, but this is your choice. Do you still feel healthier since you dropped meat from your diet?
