My blog is my masterpiece that I will pass on!

By: Mona

Google Buzz

My friend Lisa and I were having a discussion about blogs today, and she asked me about some blogs. I said, “she stopped writing. She got married. Which is stupid! Both parts!” :P

Then Lisa argued with me and thought blogs are a personal space for single people. I said no way! She then told me that when Arab girls marry, that’s it. They throw everything away and become closed in to this new life. Then Lisa said that I will end up the same. I told her NO WAY! If I ever get married, which is slim to none chance now, if the guy does not like this crazy blog of mine, then screw him. That’s rule number one. I don’t want an extravagant house. I want internet connection and my laptop!

Lisa told me that I am just kidden my self for now. I told her no no. I think she is talking about people who only do this for fun. I do this professionally. Blogging is no longer a hobby of mine. It is a place to discuss with other people my life, my points of views, and my bewilderment with the staggering number of stupid people in this world. I think people need to realize that there is a difference between bloggers who just write for fun, and those who are unemployed bums who need money and write passionately about many issues that need to be discussed in this world. So, I need money, and for the past 4 months, this blog has been sustaining me. I got bills to pay people! I am not kidden. I love my blog. I think I passionately write and seriously treat it as a job.

Writing blog posts every day, creating templates, upgrading, enhancing, etc, all take time and effort. I am putting more work into this than I am getting back financially. It’s ok. I enjoy it more than anything in this world. My blog is my baby! If I die, I will pass it to my children! Yah man! I am serious. Have you serious bloggers ever thought about who will inherit your blog? You put so much time and effort into it, who will take it over after you?

    Hey Mona,

    Great entry! I too share the same opinions. I don’t NEED an extravagant life. What I need is to be able to connect with people. Everyone. Everywhere. On a daily basis. The best place for that is online! :)

    I think what Lisa, and many others fail to realize is that most of those “blogs for fun” out there are people who don’t really understand the true purpose of blogging, or don’t truly have an interest in networking. However, or whatever blogging is intended for, is ultimately up to the user.

    I am on board with you though. More people need to realize the true potential of the internet and how you can reach out to so many people, and be exposed to real truths of the world. We need to use these tools to educate each other across the globe.

    The one thing that scares me the most is the Internet 2 move, and loosing net neutrality. If this happens, we need to find some way to archive everything on the internet and somehow find a way to continue to connect without the restrictions of our “leaders” and their good ol censorship.

    I know Canadian bloggers are pretty open and expressive. I doubt there will be neutrality on Canadian blogs. Plus I will never go back to the Arab world or any world that denies people the basic right of free speech.

    Exactly, I agree with the both of u..
    I don’t find a need to change who I am because a person decided to tag along in my life…
    People who blog for fun don’t know the true or even real meaning of what blogging is supposed to initially be about. I thank people like Mona- A person who is dedicated and passionate towards their blog who aimlessly, points out everything that the majority of people in this day and age don’t think about, or better yet don’t even consider the importance of such discussions..
    Keep doing what you do..You’ve truly inspired me, and hopefully other people feel the same way!

    Hey not all of us that blog are unemployed..lol. Unfortunately, the fact that I am employed means that my blog takes on more privacy as I tend to blog about work just as much as I blog about politics and events. There are days I wish I could have a more public blog to spark discussion, but I love to teach and produce art. Maybe someday I will be secure enough in a job that I don’t worry about someone stumbling onto my blog. You are welcome to friend me, link on twitter, just make sure I know it’s you or I will deny.

    I think the only worry you have with getting married is the fact that in some ways it comes with Islam, I have heard horror stories of wives being killed over the smallest things. Just make sure you find a guy who doesn’t assume you will just fall in line and you will be just fine.

    There are plenty of married people out there blogging! Where would anyone get the notion that it’s just for single people? I suppose a lot of people start blogs that don’t really go anywhere and at some point, they feel like they “grow out of it,” but I think it depends on the person and the type of blog they are running. If I look back at the kind of blogs I had when I was 12 and 13, then sure, I’ve grown out of THAT. But as I’ve grown and matured, so has the type of blog I keep, and I think some people misunderstand that, not realizing that when I say “blog” I don’t mean the netspeak-filled, tacky-coloured xanga I used to have. So, I don’t think it’s about age or where you are in your life, but what your perspective is on blogging and how you go about doing it. It’s just like keeping a journal — there are plenty of adults out there who keep journals for their whole lives, but to some, the idea of keeping a “diary” is one attributed to young girls.

    Here is another angle for you – you mention that blogging is no longer a hobby, but essentially your job. Although it has no fixed hours (very envious), it does take up a lot of your time (at the moment) because you’re ’single’. Once you get married – would it be possible/fair to dedicate as much time to the blog on a daily basis, taking time away from newly married life, or a life with kids?

    @Professor Mikey – ooh you are mentioning a HUUUGE stereotype which is ofcourse spun in a million different directions before it has been reported! It is true that issues do happen – but they are in no way related to religion. These happen more specifically in a miniscule percent of communities. I am sure these incidents happen in regions where the religion is not Islam, but are not reported because it won’t sell.

    it’s kinda sad if being married means stopping doing the things you love to placate your husband and his ego. I’m married and I am a Muslim. My husband lets me do the things I love because he respects me as another person sharing his life. Like you, I don’t need extravagant life. Just make sure I have constant internet connection!

    I certainly don’t plan on stopping blogging when I get married! There are so many amazing bloggers out there both married and single. And yes, I sometimes wonder what will happen to my blog when I’m gone (even though that will be a long time from now). It’s sad to imagine that it might all be wiped away someday.

    I used to blog at work and while I was working, my boss used to read my blog. It was a great place to express my real concerns with work. He didn’t mind! :) As long as I didn’t mention names than I was fine!

    @Cookie Monster
    When I get married? Won’t I have any free time? I have parents, man, they have more free time than me! Being married does not mean you no longer have time. You can share your experiences with others, and get advice over the net too. :) There is more advantage to having a blog when you are married!

    @Erica
    Yah. I know you won’t stop blogging! You better not! Your sister does not and she is married. hehehe

    It’s true, it is a stereotype, which is why I take it at a grain of salt. I only mentioned it because the stereotype does exist so as long as you are aware of it, you can easily avoid any situation of it. I know Islam is not the only religion with that stereotype.

    @Mona
    I work in the conservative “bible belt” south of the US, we weren’t even allowed to advertise our spring musical last year on campus because the title was “Urinetown” If there is any indication on my blog that it is me, it can be troublesome, so I just protect it.
