Big boys need their toys
By: Mona
.......................
I remember about 3 years ago, I blogged about the Ipod Nano that I bought my self. It was an impulsive $250 purchase, but we all have to treat our selves once in a blue moon. However, I got severely criticized from certain someone (a guy) that I spent way too much on a toy.
Hmm, why us girls get criticized for buying something expensive once in a while, and men spend 1000’s of dollars buying cars, extreme gadgets, insanely priced mobile phones, etc? Yet, we are the ones that get criticized for buying shoes, purses, clothes, colourful gadgets, etc?
Now tell me, seriously, who spends more? And who has the right to criticize who here?

Guys plan their purchases, so I’d say girls make more impulsive purchases. Guys research it, plan what we want to purchase, buy it and leave. Girls like to shop and go in for one thing and come out with 10! For reasons we’ll never understand, it’s fun to them.
@Keith
lool.. I guess!
I choose girls, for me its a proven fact girls spend much money buying things they even don’t need , while on the other hand we men buys what we need and thats it.
Of course there are always exeptions
I am finding it funny that guys so far are giving their opinions and blaming us girls. WHERE ARE THE GIRLS? YA BANAT YA 7ILWEEN!! WEENKOM!
3AM YIT-MASKHARO EL SHABAB 3ALEENA!!
u won’t find the girls, they are busy shopping in some mall
It has been my experience that guys will buy very large purchases on impulse, but girls will spend more overall on multiple things. So, if the question is who spends more on impulse, I’d say the girls. If the question is who spends more on one item then guys.
This poll is not going to the favour of my team. Now I know who reads my blog more. lol If you are undecided, you can always vote for me!
I think guys do it more, but maybe it’s just the men I’m around. Plenty of men are guilty of buying things they don’t need too… many spend thousands on stuff like fancy cars, expensive entertainment systems, etc. I’m not sure, at the end of the day, I think both genders are likely to make stupid purchases!
Hmmm.. both teams do make mistakes.. hmm.. but we do not ALWAYS make crazy impulsive purchases.
Does it really matter? If someone says you spent too much money on something and you shouldn’t be making impulse buys there is only one response suited for them; go to hell.
It’s your money to do with what you please.
I would say that guys tend to spend more on impulse purchases. They may not make as many impulse purchases as women do because women are the ones who do the majority of the household shopping but when men do buy impulsively they generally go all out. Women’s impulse purchases tend to be small ticket items generally speaking. They may go grocery shopping pick up a lemon meringue pie at half price that wasn’t on their shopping list. Many guys on the other hand when they do shop on that rare occasion they usually don’t make a list and they don’t shop around much for the best deal like the more experienced women shoppers. They go into only a few stores and then buy the item and if they see something else they like they pick that up too and leave. Generally speaking man pay more for their stuff and don’t give it much thought. Women are the ones in charge of the household shopping and know better what things cost and what is a good deal and what isn’t from their extensive shopping experience. Now before guys slam me I am not saying all men and women are like this but from my experience a lot are.
I don’t buy this men buy what they need thing. Nobody needs a new cell phone/tv/car every year or two when the one they have is still working just fine. Plus I know a LOT of guys that are collector geeks and spend four figures a year on various stuff off of ebay (records, comics, video games, actual toys whatever) so I don’t think women are all that more prone to impulse buys for smaller items.
Though personally, I really don’t get people that buy a whole new wardrobe every six months either and spend the same amount on cosmetics in the same time period, but I definitely don’t think one is better than the other.
@Nadia
What you mention are not impulse buys. These people have been coveting this stuff for some time and go out and buy whether they need it or not. Not the same say going to the store to buy a pair of pants and walking out with 3 shirts as well that you weren’t planning on buying but couldn’t resist because they were on sale.
Although I wont admit it, but I am an impulsive buyer. Saying that, I recycle my old toys, and generally get a reasonable amount back by reselling… so I guess it is good to b impulsive
Why is the percentage of the Mona votes is going up? 8 people so far voted for me.. lool I know who you are!!!
There seem to be two different social stratospheres in my uni. Us normal middle class folks seem to spend pretty evenly. Girly clothes purchases are counteracted by boys’ heavy drinking sessions. Everyone has similar gadgets as standard (mobile, cheap compact digital camera, mp3 player and laptop). Then there’s the we-own-our-own-horses set. No amount of designer gear those girls buy can ever counteract the constantly updated cars and clay pigeon shooting of the boys. Constantly showing off your manliness seems to cost more than just looking pretty.
I suppose guys traditionally don’t enjoy the “shopping experience” so much but I’d guess if you added up all the bills they secretly spend a whole load more. I had a friend who bought a yacht and he was a lousy sailor, he bought a keyboard and couldn’t play it, decks and he couldn’t mix, I don’t know him now but I suppose he still blows his cash on very expensive junk to this day.
We may buy a lot in sheer quantity but their toys tend to cost more.
