I hope things changed just a tiny bit

By: Mona
.......................

Google Buzz

Over a year ago, I started a poll about my visitors. I no longer have the exact statistics, but I always find it fascinating about readers of this blog, and it helps me in my daily writings. When I did the poll last year, the way higher percentage as I recall correctly was non-Arab readers.

[source]

I have had many issues in the past regarding the Arab blogsphere. I am not welcomed in it, I am not allowed to join many Arab blog networks, and I am ridiculed with a passion from that selected niche. Since I am rebellious, a girl, and say a few things that they hate, the Arab visitor count to my blog is very low. However, there is an exception of those visitors that search for the forbidden Arab love and land here from Google. They just need their mother to work harder to find them a perfect pure teen Arab bride, and not waste their time finding a [fill in blank] Arab girl.

So, that was about a year ago. Now, I feel like I am regaining an Arab audience, I hope. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Another famous poll!

Are you?

16 votes so far, and you’re at 50/50! That’s good, right? Seems like a good mix.

My father is Arab and my mom isn’t. But I talk Arabic, look like an Arab, have more of an Arab lifestyle, and lived in an Arab country for almost half my life, so when I think about I’m just Arab. I don’t really think about being mixed lol. But I voted mixed to be truthful.

I’m Indian but I still feel like a lot of your rebellious attitudes reflect my culture too in that I got a lot of hassle about why I wasn’t looking for a husband at 19/20 and my family are very strict christians (so no premarital sex, cover your hair in church, dress modestly, rarely drink etc). However our views differ in a lot of ways as religion plays a smaller part in my life and when that’s stripped away all the “cover your legs!” mentality means very little. I feel very caught in the middle at uni where I don’t ever get drunk (so no fun being the babysitter if I go out with white friends, herding drunks onto a bus is embaressing) and my Indian friends ditched me when I got a white boyfriend and didn’t come back even though we’re engaged now  I’m very glad I’m not the only person who won’t change behaviours to get into one slot or another!

Here’s something to think about: what is the ratio of arab:non-arab on the internet? Your chances of having more non-arabs are likely higher from the start, even if you are an arab blogger.

I know that.. but since my site has an in your face word such as “arab,” you would think I would get a bit more Arab readers.. I guess not. Oh well! Makes me more diverse. ;)

I’m an Arab….um….I think….Arabs – especially the youth – are not so into plokking (blogging) I think, since they are busy hanging out in the mall, throwing their numbers around. And even if they are, the percentage into English Plokking is even smaller or they would get ridiculed for their “bebsi and ben” language…

    take care girl

Sorry the previous comment seems to generalize abt Arabs. No offense to any Arabs reading that. I’m an Arap myself. Of course not everyone talks like that, and not everyone is into throwin their numbers in the mall, but there is a percentage that do that….. :|

That’s called fabricated results. Let the world see, that the Rebellious Arab Girl has more non-Arabs readers! People are interested in an Arab’s life.. we are just normal people with different cultural values. That’s all! :)

    Dear Mona

I’m an Arab and I really like your blog. Some of it is really funny and refreshing. But other posts are a bit useless and dumb. Please don’t take this as an insult, like I said I really like the blog and I’m just being honest. I wish you would write more about politics and current affairs.

    Regards, a loyal Arab reader
Please forgive me for any offense I may have caused

You know, in my entire life, I have never told a stranger, or in this case, a blogger, that some of their posts are useless and dumb. It’s funny telling a person, who writes personal stuff that what they say is useless and dumb. It makes me look so low infront of others. Don’t you think?

But thanks for liking some of my blog posts and being an Arab.

Also, I have no reason to write about Politics or current affairs. This is a personal blog, and that’s it. I sometimes do, but only if it effects me as a person.

I used to read dozens of Arab blogs. Now, I’m down to just a few, and I stopped reading all the politically oriented blogs. Too many headaches for me. Actually, there’s still one that’s an Arab activist blog I read but that’s only because it’s so over-the-top that it’s good entertainment. I much prefer the blogs where people are just talking about what’s going on with them, and maybe throw in social issues once in a while. But I think Ibrahim has a point in way. You’d undoubtedly get more Arab readers if you worked harder at trying to be “relevant” to the politics of the Arab world. You’d probably lose most of your non-Arab readers if you did that, though. I think you are doing great with the mix as it is!

Are you saying that I would gain an Arab audience if I start talking about politics? Why? Is that all that Arabs care about? I don’t think so. There is more to life than POLITICS! I am glad I sway away from that. I rather be and discuss life then waste it talking about politics, and even wars. It is the messed up politics that destroyed people’s minds!

    Hey Mona,
Is it more important to feel disrespected by your own community, or feel supported by a large mix of people?
I think that Arabs do like you, most of them just can’t express it for some reason or the other, mainly because you are too smart and they just can’t handle it! :!: I am talking about guys especially, they expect you to break down in tears at the slightest remark. But you kick ass. And don’t listen to anyone, all your posts are good – they describe your mood and thoughts one day at a time.
Freedom of speech, Mona, show them what you’re made of

Instead of looking at the percentage, may be you should look into the absolute numbers? And determine if you are gaining a rapid increase in the number of ‘Arab’ readers. This percentage thing that you did may not reflect the true picture if you gained a huge number of non-Arab followers as well.
In other words, instead of creating Pie Charts with all Arab and non-Arab followers, may be do a ‘line’ chart (with Time in X axis) with ‘only’ Arab readers and see the ‘growth’?
Just a suggestion. Sorry, it’s the ‘Statistics major’ in me.

Although I was born in an Arab country but I’m not an Arab. I was wondering what is the exact definition of an “Arab”! A person born in an arab nation, a person born in some other country but their parents or grandparents migrated from an arab country or is it something else?

An Arab is a person who has Arabic ancestry. So doesn’t matter where you are born.
