I remember bringing in “black or white” into my elementary music class during our “share your favorite music” days. No matter what the other drama in his life was, he is definitely one of the best musicians of all time & will be remembered forever through his music.

The first song I was introduced to was “Black or White”. I remember my PE gym teacher played it all the time during our warm-ups in elementary school. So, I guess that’s my favourite MJ song. Just because it was there first.

I just heard about this when I loaded your blog! I’m shocked! My youth wouldn’t have been the same without Micheal Jackson. They used to play this one at the roller rink all the time when I was in junior high school:

And I see you linked “Beat It” – the first time I heard that song was while I was in boot camp. I hadn’t heard any music at all for a couple months and then I got assigned to duty in the chow hall for a couple days and one of the cooks was playing the radio and they were playing that song several times an hour. “Thriller” came out while I was in bootcamp, and after graduation that was pretty much all I was listening to.

I haven’t been a fan of his in recent years but I feel really sad that part of my youth is gone forever now. Farrah Fawcett too! She was every boy’s fantasy when I was a kid. I don’t think any woman before or since has ever captured the hearts of so many adolescent males!

Damn. Terrible day. I’m gonna go to the gym now and distract myself.

Smooth criminal and Billie Jean are staples at every university event I go to, they’re going to make me sad to hear them There’s no popstar alive who I can think of who’s even vaguely prepared to fill his shoes, he really was something else.

billie jean is my favorite too, so are thriller and rock with you. mj was a contemporary. i loved listening and dancing to the jackson 5’s music during the 70s. mj’s “give love on christmas day” became a staple of the season. he will be missed – the total performer of the 20th century.

i used to blow dry a curl away my hair to look like farrah fawcett.. every 70s girl wanted to be farrah and be married to the bionic man. this is is sad day indeed in the history of entertainment.

Sorry the guy’s dead, but I’m not entirely sure a bloke with a dodgy record around children can be described as a “culture icon”.

I don’t think i can choose a song or two, he is truly the king, i can remember it like yesterday the days i spent just jumping around to his music. I love Little Susie, Black or White, You are not alone…I love all his songs…and he will live on through his music in the hearts of those who loved him akeed..gone too soon

I was SHOCKED when I heard about Michael Jackson death yesterday! I believe he was a kind and gentle man who was miss represented and was taken advantage off because of his fame and fortune. I do believe his father is to blame. Do to his greed for cash, he pushed his kids especially Michael to perform. He defiantly missed his childhood! I hope where ever he is, he is the child he always wanted to be! RIP my friend!

I did not fully live that era.. I started listening to music in the 90s, and frankly his 90s music was just shallow compared with the 70s and 80s..

When I got my hands on the History Disc 1 I used it for years for working out ) sooo powerful and strong and uplifting his music!

I love Smooth Criminal, Bad, Beat it, Thriller, and some of the happy early songs: Blame it on the boogie, dont stop till you get enough best.

His music will be remembered forever..

all the time I actually hoped he would somehow, magically, get back to his grand creativity. It was unrealistic I know, but I somehow kept hoping he could someday get back to producing great music (now please if you’re a hard core fan – I will never like his 90s and 2000 on music… please just believe when I say I am SURE, and spare your comments towards me).

Caledonian Jim.. I don’t think he was convicted of anything, and that means he is considered innocent. Although I am aware there were some things that sounded convincing when spread by the press, but never verified in court.
And I think it is unfair to slander someone, alive or not, for things that have not been proven in court.

Besides – I do think the musical or otherwise artistic work of a person, even if he or she was a criminal, can and should be judged independent of the person. Imagine a mass murderer, say Hitler. Say Hitler would not have been such a hideous painter, but would have been really good. Everyone of us would have a real awkward feeling looking at his paintings. But if they’re masterpieces of art, why not enjoy them without it meaning to respect the murderer who painted them?
I enjoy listening to Wagner, even though he was a very racist man. I do not like his political attitudes, but his music no one with ears to hear will disagree on is nothing short from genius.
