I feel like I committed some atrocity!

By: Mona
.......................

Well, today I was told more rules of my work place. I got to dress appropriately, I got to do my work on time, work on weekends if I had to, blah blah, and worse yet, I AM ON PROBATION! I feel like I am a bad person and I did something awful! Someone is giving me a time out for 90 days!

Even though I had a job before for over six years, I was never given a probation period. What’s up with this probation? Maybe because I used to be a contract worker for so many years, and I always had to sign a piece of paper selling my mind and soul from X to Y time frame. I don’t think there is a probation time with contract workers, but just a daily watchful eye or you are fired!

I was threatened to be fired several times at my old job for my attitude of speaking out about the unfairness. I was kept there because I did kick ass work! I think.. Good thing I quit before they got sick of me. I cracked before them last year! Hehehe.. :D

OH MY GOD! You know what? The contract I signed when I got this new job said a beginning date and NO END DATE! I was like.. OH MY DEAR LORD! YOU WANT ME TO STAY HERE FOR ETERNITY? ALL RIGHT! FREE DAILY COFFEE AND PROGRAMMING WEBSITE APPLICATIONS! YAY! I love my job!! Give me a forever probation or whatever politically correct term you want to use. I can program websites forever!

Now this is the good life.

Welcome to the real world. 90 Days probation you are getting it easy. I changed jobs a year ago I had 6 months probation and I have been working for 30 years. So you ignore it and get on doing what you like best, hopefully work.
Think on the bright side, you can also quit without notice during these 90 days, so the company is on probation too. Life is not so unfair after all.

You know what freaks me out most about the ‘probation period’? That you’re being watched without noticing who’s watching you and who’s not. You get tested indirectly when you least expect it, not only by senior managers but also by employees at your level. That doesn’t mean you cant be who you are, be so and show confidence, but try and hold your tongue if you see something you dont like until probation is over! At least that’s the tip I’ve been given by almost everyone before I started my new job (People here are not very accepting and not eager to embrace change so am not sure if they’ll put up with feedback coming from NEW employees, am sure its different in the West).. well, I’m currently in probation too ;)
Glad you love your job, ENJOY it :)

    Congrats on your job! :)
Yep, my place has 6 months probation on all positions (I started 4 years ago)- I think the place before this had the same. Thankfully, they aren’t too strict about things; the main thing was that I couldn’t take vacation until after 6 months.
Don’t stress about it, just smile and do good work, which I’m sure you do anyways!

The place I work has a six month probation. From what I heard they usually let you know one or two months before the probation is up regarding whether you are a good fit or not. If you are not a good fit then it essentially gives you two months of time to look for something else. So probation is not always a bad thing.

The last place I worked had a ninety day. The only people I had ever seen that didn’t make it were complete idiots.I was there for 28 years.

I figured it would be fine. Usually “probation” is a formality, IMHO.

Not necessarily. Maybe she kindda sensed that they need her there ’cause of the good work she provides. She has the right to feel good about herself.

Last time I had a job, I used to go whenever I like, leave whenever I like and stay home whenever I like too. They only gave me hints when I overdo it, but never deducted from my salary or gave a real warning because they NEEDED me and there was no one else there who can provide same quality. Not because they LOVED me.

Now THAT’S a show off! see?

We’ve lived the life of self-employed musicians, writers and subcontractors for so long, we have no idea what a real job means, let alone probation.

But now that you mention free coffee, we might need to rethink our current status.

I feel like I committed some atrocity!

Perhaps you have  Maybe you’ve axe-murdered someone in your sleep. Have you ever woken up in the morning with blood on your hand? Or maybe you have a split personality, and your other half is a serial killer. Do you have empty gaps in your memory, find yourself in strange place and can’t remember how you got there?
