I didn’t teach her, I swear!

By: Mona

Google Buzz

We were in the car today going to the mall, and my mom was mentioning something about Eid gathering for kids somewhere in the city. So she asked my sister if she wanted to go, and my sister replied pretty agressively and said,

“No way! I don’t want to go where Arabs are!” Even though we have to explain to the masses, and her, that not all Muslims are Arabs, and not all Arabs are Muslim. But you know, no one will understand that, ever!

My mom said, “You are Arab! What’s wrong with us?”

My sister said, “The rest are weird and all they do is talk, talk, and won’t stop talking!”

I looked at my sister, and I rolled my eyes the other way, then tilted my head toward the window and thought, “I didn’t do it. I swear! I had no influence over her. I can’t control that teen. No one can! She came up with that conclusion all by her self!”

My sister is a mini-me version of me! :D

I wouldn’t go to that extreme for not being around Arabs my age, but seriously, they do talk a lot, gossip, and stare menacingly at each other.

    The point of this post is not Arabs and what they do. The point was that my sister may reach that level to maybe one day inherit this website. When I am 80, wrinkly, on my death bed, then I will tell her about this site. lol

    Seriously, it is very sad if a teen age kid can draw the same conclusions about Arabs. There must be somethig seriously wrong about they way we were all raised, very scary.

    Ah, explaining that All Arabs are not Muslims and All Muslims are not Arabs is one the hardest things to do somehow either they don’t listen or refuse to comprehend.

    I had to pick up a sister from a shelter downtown and bring her back to her family where I live. She was from Palestine and was surprised that I was an American Muslim, who actually spoke a little Arabic.
    Now all I have to remember is that not all Arabs are Muslims, cus whenever I meet an Arab I’m always quick to salaam waalaikum, instead of being religiously sensitive. God forbid i say peace be upon you to a non-muslim :razz:

    It goes to show you have a strong character which influences those around you. You have clearly rubbed onto your sister. But she makes a good point. I have always tried to avoid Arabs because of their notorious gossip and Sh*t they talk about people… so yeah… she has a good stance. Avoid Arabs (inevitably our own race) so as not to hurt them or have them hurt us. :razz:

    Salamu 3alaikum and 3eid mubarak,

    I don’t understand, you picked a Palestinian girl and you brought her back to her family where you live. She didn’t realise all this time that you’re a Muslim American?

    Also when you speak Arabic, do you speak classical?

    Walaikum salaam brothers, wa al-ajmal.

    @Charlie Hayse
    I picked her up and said Salaam to a brother that was with her he didn’t say anything back. I just assumed that he wasn’t Muslim, but thought that it was strange that he didn’t return the peace.
    I know it has Muslim written all over it, Ya know to say Peace be upon you. But its as if it were a bad thing, or worse, a Muslim thing. :evil:

    @mohamed
    She asked to be brought to the masjid I was at for the Eid celebration since we had to push it forward a few days cus of weather. Her family was at the masjid during the celebration and just asked for the transport, and I happily obliged. She talked mostly and I just listened.
    The only classical I speak is straight from the Quran, but when I speak normally it’s modern Arabic.

    Maybe your sister just happened to have bad history with Arabs and she’s mad about it, important is in my opinion that you always remind her that even Arabs aren’t alike and she shouldn’t generalize the concept the all Arabs only talk, gossip, or are weird.

    I agree. I am one of those few Arabs that don’t talk shit about others or are weird. Insane, but not weird. :)

    Aww… come on. Arabs are not the only ones who gossip too much. Why do you think the other countries have showbiz talk shows? :grin:
    Hopefully your sister will understand someday the issues about race, religion, and all that…
