Same old tune
By: Mona
.......................
It’s that day again. Yep! You guessed it. It’s Valentines day, and I will carry on the same old tradition as I did for the past 3 years. I gathered all my readers and asked them to help me boycott it! I can’t believe that people still think that loving a person should be a one day special thing. What about the rest of the days of the year? What about those other people that don’t have anyone to love?

There ya go!
Also, I posted a poll that was running on my blog for the past two weeks, and so far these are the results. I am so disappointed. Most of you live in la la land!!
History of my utter despise of Valentines Day

I would be lying if I go around telling random strangers that I love them. Who the hell does that?
People on Twitter do! Lamos!!
Valentines was designed to promote consumerism to sell hallmark cards and gifts… its purely pathetic… and mythological full of crap. U with me?
@Incandescent Chimera
Actually.. I thought it had to do with a Saint called St. Valentines.. ??
I do greet people Happy Valentine’s Day during this day but I NEVER give presents. Apparently it’s not about “love and relationships” occasion, it’s more about “expectation day”. It’s pretty silly that most people celebrate it with expensive gifts instead of thought and care. The old saying said it so well.. “Every day is Valentine’s Day if we love each other.”
Go and treat yourself mona, you deserve it! And HAPPY VALENTINES DAY to all =) x
I totally agree that Valentine’s Day should be celebrated year round and not just one day a year. I am not interested in overpaying to have dinner and spending a fortune on roses just to say that I did. I’d much rather spend time with my family and husband without the title of Valentine’s Day.
With that said, I do hope you have a great day!
Ofcourse you don’t believe in Vday … you’re muslim.
No problem … don’t celebrate
I am not a great believer in Valentine’s Day, but People do take their loved ones for granted. So it is not such a bad idea to actually have a day when we all say it out loud. So Happy Valentine’s Day y’all
@Mona
lol
It did… bt it was heavily promoted for consumerism purposes. Surveys even show the most chocolate sold each year anywhere in the world is on Valentines Day
Valentines Day is a traditional event. I don’t celebrate it because of the event itself but as a reminder that we need to give and show love for the rest of our lives not just on a one day occasion or a monthly festivity.
What makes February 14, 2010 different is that it is the Chinese New Year.
happy v-day 2 ya mona
Ayyeee ayeee.. can this day get any slower!!
Singles Awareness Day! damn
@Aman
Good way of putting it!
Honestly, Inshallah if I get married I would like to celebrate valentines day, just because it looks soooooooooooooooooooooo awsome. Hey I am single, and I am a teen, you have no idea how appealing that looks. Just to let my hubby know he’s extra special. Yeah why is that a woman has to make her HUSBAND feel special? What bullshit is that? Man, sexism.
But for now, Valentines day blows
@Jasmine. I kind of like Valentine’s day. I used to boycot it because I thought the Americanization of the entire world should be STOPPED. My politically active early college years! Those times.. *sigh* LOL.
A few years ago my DAD changed my mind. I told him the above – he said that was correct, and neiher Europe nor Arabia had culturally had Valentine’s day before America through popular culture spread its own celebrations. BUT:If there was a day to celebrate one’s relationship, to remind oneself of how lucky one is to love someone and be loved, then that is a good thing.
Can you believe that changed my perspective A LOT. And my Dad is not an uber romantic person at all. Since then I try to change hubby’s mind (we got to know as politically active college students…freshmen to be exact, although this term is American too I guess).
Also I think as a single girl one could celebrate with girlfriends. Just go see a nice movie, go for a coffee or drink… do something nice, enjoy company, celebrate friendship or family. it need not be a relationship IMO. A nice occasion to think about the good in our lives.
And ya, it comes from a bishop of the name… who allegedly married couples which for some reason was dangerous or prohibited (Roman occupation, maybe?). Didn’t he become a martyr according to Christian belief?
You sound like a muslim cleric, valentine’s day could be anything, it’s just for fun, or a day celebrate love, or a day to renew your love to someone… who cares, it’s just for fun, it doesn’t mean that there is only one day for love in the whole year.
I think the virtue of love is something that we lack in most of the Arab countries, most muslims don’t hesitate to celebrate violens, but love…no.
