All the right friends in all the wrong places

By: Mona
.......................

I guess being a blogger taught me a lot about life, especially friendships. You see, I feel that I am better off being friends with all of you, my daily readers, because the people I met in my life and was friends with for a short or even a long time really did not work out.

I don’t have a problem with people, but people have a problem with me and feel that they can use me or get whatever they want out of me, because I am too damn nice and selfless, and then treat me like left over bones. I am the last one on their list.

I don’t want to force anyone to make me one of their priorities in life. I am not selfish at all. I just feel that I am a bit more worth it. I want to feel that someone really appreciates my friendship because of the person I am. I am tired of people taking advantage of me or only think of me as a friend when they need something.

It’s funny the number of people that went after me, pretty much hounded me just so they can ask me for something. It sucks, and that’s the reason I am afraid or just unsure if I can ever trust anyone. However, virtually, through this blog, I feel that some of you people out there are a lot more appreciative of who I am. You are more appreciative and willing to listen to me and converse. I never experienced that before with any of the friends I had in the past.

No one ever wanted to listen to me, and I just kept it inside and stayed quiet. That’s why I am a very quiet person in real life. I try to talk, but I don’t know who to trust and if they are really willing to listen to me. It’s really hard to find a friend to listen to you, and that’s why I feel that all of us are living in the wrong places. Fortunately, this blog brought all of you and I together. So I feel a bit better I guess and not alone.

I know I am late in posting a song that I am enjoying listening to this week, but here it is. This song inspired me, and I really like the lead singer of OneRepublic. He is cute! :P

Isn’t it funny that we turn to the internet to be heard? I mean a bunch of strangers are willing to listen to what I write but not some of the people I know. That is why I am officially addicted to the internet!

It’s a strange phenomenon. I did a documentary back when I was in college about blogging, and what Ameena says is true: we blog to be heard. Never before have humans lived in such a small world. We can say anything we want, and it can be read by virtually anyone.

It’s comparable to why people tag up walls with graffiti. It’s to leave their mark on the world, so people will know they were there. So people remember them, and they don’t vanish into a sea of (mostly useless) information. That’s kind of what blogging is. While it may not be the same reason for everyone, at its core it can be traced to one motive: people want to be heard.

I will say this though, being the nice person sucks. But you know what I’ve found? Sometimes, and it is rare, being nice can lead to wonderful things. And it’s those things that make it worth it :)

I agree with u… we are so silenced by all around us… we turn to the internet to get our silent voices heard

You know, I don’t know but my story is just like you, Mona. I just see myself in you. Whenever you talk about yourself, it’s like you are talking about me. You know, blogging and the internet as a whole, helps one find another world where they can be appreciated for what they are and I’m actually finding that and it’s a really awesome feeling :) .

I’m really glad I found your blog because for me I feel that I have found a friend and someone who is going through what I’m going through and I feel like now I’ve got someone who understands me and knows exactly what I’m going through even though I haven’t talked to you personally..you know, that’s how I feel reading your blog every time :) . It’s such a great feeling :) .

I usually say that “sometimes strangers can be better company than a friend”. What I realize is that when we want honest advice, someone who doesn’t know us that well can tell us the honest truth without worrying if we are hurting their feelings. Friends tend to want to soften the blow and wind up saying nice things and not confronting you with what you really need to hear.

I think a lot of us struggle with the same issues you are having when it comes to respect from those around us. You have a powerful voice through this blog. You need to figure out how to translate that to the people you are around.

I like your analysis because it is true. I can’t even fathom the affects that internet had on regular people like me that probably would never be heard by the outside world, ever. This medium has created this open field of thoughts, and opinions are heard by anyone who wants to hear them. You no longer have to sell a book, or get your 5 minutes on TV anymore.

Just click publish, and that’s it! :)

Awww! I am glad you feel comfort in knowing that someone else has a similar thought or even problem as you. It’s good to know that we are not alone.

The people that I knew around me were reading this blog, and probably still do, and they either hate it, or think it is the only way to get in touch with me. Not through an email or call. Only through here, because they labeled me now as a virtual object, because they don’t understand why I resorted to this method of communication.

    Oh well, ce la ve!

You clearly had the wrong friends.. I think it is a particular feature of a gossipy and “scandal” society like the Arab one and many other “hot-blooded” societies are people have a hard time being themselves. are restrained too much, and unhappy for it.

I wish you that you can get away from EVERYTHING for continued education or a job, at best to a different country. At best to a bigger city there (small towns or countryside can suffocate you again, and the people there most likely are a little narrow minded, too, no matter what country).

Believe me you will BREATHE. what you describe I had until I moved to a big city right after highschool. I actually picked a particular curriculum at least 70% to have a reason to move far away. Looking back I kind of envy my sister who is still at home – when being free and adventurous at a very young age Mom’s cooking and care are missed :)
But the freedom and different people in a city where no one knows you in all make up for it, and you are offered dozens over dozens of interesting people “on a plate” (or in a dorm :) ).
I hope you can experience this for one reason or another later in your life. If you want of course. You being homesick in a city that sucks I would not wish for you!

I kinda understand what you mean. Sometimes it’s better to keep your thoughts to yourself because you really don’t know who to trust, even your friends. Good thing you have this blog to blow steam, huh? ;-)
