Dear Mona . . . why?

By: Mona
.......................

I got an email a couple of days ago asking the following question:

“Why do Arab men marry a dozen women and have 100s of children? Arab women don’t protest about them doing so? Please gimme a reply or post about it on the blog if you have time. Thanks.”

1. It is Muslim men, not Arab men. Only 80% of Arabs are Muslim.

2. They marry up to 4 maximum.

3. If you are a guy and have the ability to keep one girl, then applause and a standing ovation to you my friend. If you can manage 4, then dear God! You must be super patient and can comply to too many demands. We love to demand!

4. Women don’t protest cause they have not been reading my blog. Shame on them! No, just kidden! I don’t really have an answer, but some women accept being the “other” lady.

Is this a way for Muslim men to no commit adultery?

I don’t know . Maybe back in the middle ages, but not in this modern age. Mmany men can’t afford to marry another girl, so he cheats. It’s the bad economy and expensive lifestyle of needing cell phones and unnecessary gadgets, cars, expensive furniture and stuff you know.

Anyways, good luck for those men that marry more than one. I salute your bravery for putting up with us ladies! :)

Applauds  Nice Post! By the way, my mother once said in the Arab world, men who practice polygamy are mainly men who are royal or elite class who want many children. It was practiced commonly by men who dealt in trade. Both my great grandfathers had 4 wives! After there time, it became very uncommon in Iraq.

Sarah is right, its mainly among the royals and rich business men (most of these guys in Saudi Arabia). Its not as rampant as people in the west like to think it is over there. Those groups can do this because basically they can afford to take care of 4 wives, they have the money and resources to give them what they want. You will never see someone like an auto-mechanic or a high school teacher getting 4 wives. when a middle or lower class guy does marry a second wife the majority of the time is because the first wife can’t have children and it is basically agreed that he could just go out and get a second wife to have children with. But the rate of polygamy in the middle east is still low, not all that common, people in the west like to talk about it like its more because they don’t approve of it and people by nature like to talk about things they don’t approve of.

Hmm I don’t think the marriage of 4 wives (aka polygamy) is common these days in the Arab world especially in the eastern levant region (mashreq) and the western region (maghreb), even what’s better its no longer “culturally acceptable”. Due to the rising education and modernization, ppl are slowly leaving religious practices that doesn’t make sense (or those that can create harms more than the benefits its preaches) behind. I guess the arab youth are now more open to moderation and modernization of religion, meaning they openly drop and criticize such practices. Growing up in Jordan I rarely saw any man marrying more than one, and its always perceived as a ‘cultural shock’ or betraying the wife if someone does matty a 2nd wife, the immediate response would be ‘oh poor the 1st wife and her children (if she had any) it must be harsh on her’’, only those who are extremely religious (or those who are blindly religious, who do not attempt to analyze the effectiveness of these practices) would have favouring reaction. There is a man my father knew who had married a 2nd wire, he kept it secret for 20 yrs- why? Because he knew how the people will react and might judge him, the second wife he didn’t mention in his medial service report that his company offered got sick, so he had to announce it. In fact the more I go further away to remote areas or poor regions with extremely low levels of education, the more the 2nd wife lifestyle becomes common…says allot.

Moreover, one Arabian country has gratefully taken a further step to prohibit polygamy legally that’s Tunisia!! Again, this law wasn’t applied to prevent those who are educated and more modernized (this should not be confused with westernization) from polygamy practices, but to ensure those who are either uneducated or extremely or blindly religious from such practice s… yeah you go Tunsiaa!!

Many other Muslim-majority countries that have not adopted Islamic law for marital regulations, such as Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Turkey have done the same as Tunis.

Fact: Polygamy is declining all over the arab world (with the exception of the gulf region, dunno if it has changed over there, parents usually tend to pressure their sons to get a 2nd wife).

One last important fact, over the last decades, fertility and rate of increase in population in the Arab world is in vigorous decline, due to drastic changes in family structure caused by two factors:
    1)decrease in polygamy
    2) women’s status and roles and her active involvement in the labor force

Furthermore women’s residence and education status matters , since studies directed at the arab world have proven that urab fertility is much lower than that in remote and rural areas. Also education in urabn and developed regions are far more advanced , hence normally women in urban are equally educated as men. These results matches all the other ‘devloping’ countries around the globe.

Overall, you can see there is quite allot of positive changes in the arab world taking place not starting today or a year ago, but a notice CONSTANT change taking places since at least a couple of decades ago, maybe its about time for Arabs to look at such issues which sadly does still exist (but in small percentages) with much more ‘positive’ light. :D
    ;-)

I agree with the other commenters :P

Polygamy does exist in two cases: among rich royal classes (that’s common in the gulf region especially Saudi) and also among the uneducated poor class who tend to marry more than one (two being the MOst common) to get more kids to help them work and support the family.

Yes Muslim men, you are the best, GOD (a man, didnt you know) has divinely ordained you, you are king, overpopulate the planet, waste more precious resources.

We need to (all of us women that have the means) save the children and help give them a decent life. Parent(s) (men) may be selfish but children are born innocent. Save the children.

Polygamy has nothing to do with women and everything to do with men. Women (including myself) do not agree with many practices that Islamic doctrines allow however this has not stopped them from occuring (for thousands of years). Under Islamic family law youre place as a wife is resigned to a mother and you have very little, or no rights regarding these issues depending on how harsh the interpretation. Countries that ban these practices are doing so on their own merit and not on any account from religious practices. Dont believe me, go ask an Islamic scholar.

I never thought of polygamy in the way you discuss it here. However, I think/know you are right because my husband is neither Arab or Muslim, but there is no way he would want or could handle any more demands than he has on him already – not from me of course – hehe ;)

it is refreshing to me to see an unbiased view on polygamy, since in essence, it is truly just a different form of family/marriage. and there should not be any stigma against it of being “evil bastards that just use woman for sex/property” and that it has been something to cross most cultures and religions in one form or another.

Men can marry 4 wives for a host of reasons.

When it comes down to it all Semitic religions give man the upper hand over women so it is just in the nature of Judaism,Christianity and Islam.

Every government or religious instution was founded by men, for men. Therefore, all institutions in the world are patriarchal.

Angelina have you done any research into this field, have you spoken to any Muslim women in this situation, have you lived in a Muslim country for an extended period of time, and have you studied Sharia law.

Since I have done all of the above, I disagree with you on the point you have just made.

We have more people in the world now than in the history of mankind put together. The indegenous population of Europe is declining, and very soon most the world will be occupied by Asia, and Africa. So the world will be populated by the nations that are the most patriarchal, have not been able to maintain any kind of stable democratic governments, ravaged by war, Terrible economies, high unemployment, mass shortages of housing, elecricity, and water, children running on the streets, women in a constant state of fear, resource wars, over food, water, and basic amenities will result, the population will be out of control, they will blame everyone else for their problems, dictatorships will arise, the islamic clerics will bury their head further in the ground, blame the west for wars, global warming, and everything else they can think of, all the while there will be a huge wall built across Europe banning the others from entering, european and american citizenship will be divided into ’1st class’ only for the white indigenous, whilst arabs and blacks will get 2nd and 3rd class, a combination of samuel huntingtons clash of civilizations and George Orwells 1984,…………..
